The American company Bobcat Company manufactures equipment for both construction and agricultural. Formerly located in Gwinner, its American headquarters are currently located in West Fargo, North Dakota. It relocated its European headquarters from Waterloo, Belgium, to Dob, Czech Republic, in 2017. (where Bobcat operates one of its European manufacturing plants). From 1995 to July 2007, it was a division of the Ingersoll Rand Company until being sold to Doosan Infracore for US$4.9 billion.
Under the Bobcat brand, the firm sells skid steer loaders, small excavators, side-by-sides, small tractors, and other hydraulic compact equipment. This is one of the few important manufacturers in North Dakota.
Louis and Cyril Keller ran Keller Welding and Repair near Rothsay, Minnesota, in the 1950s. The Kellers were informed by a local turkey farmer named Eddie Velo in 1956 that he needed a tool that was both transportable and compact enough to fit within a pole barn. A tiny, three-wheeled design with a belt-driven transmission was introduced by the Velo brothers on February 4, 1957. After learning about problems with the belt-driven transmission from Velo, who gave the Kellers complete access to his operations, the Kellers created and patented a more durable clutch-based transmission system in 1958. The Melroe M60 loader's upgraded transmission served as its frame.
An invitation to the Kellers to participate in the 1958 Minnesota State Fair resulted from a marketing idea provided by the Kellers' uncle, an equipment salesman for the Melroe Manufacturing Company in Gwinner, North Dakota. The four-wheeled M400 type "Skid-Steer Loader" was first offered by Melroe in 1960. After the 440 model loader was introduced in 1962, the company started selling related products under the "Bobcat" brand name. The term "Bobcat" was created by Les Melroe and advertising executive Lynn Bickett as they were travelling between Minneapolis and Gwinner. The first loaders were marketed using the catchphrase "tough, swift, and nimble" by Bickett and Sylvan Melroe.
Clark Equipment Company bought Melroe Manufacturing Company in 1969. Clark Equipment Company subsequently acquired Ingersoll-Rand in 1995. Ingersoll-Rand sold Clark Equipment Company, along with the rest of its construction equipment business, to the Doosan Group of South Korea in 2007 for US$4.9 billion. The operations of The Bobcat Company have been transferred to The Clark Equipment Company. The term "Bobcat" may be utilised by The Bobcat Company as a trademark.
On January 1, Doosan and Doosan Bobcat's seven-year partnership came to an end when they were split into separate businesses.
Hyundai Heavy Industries purchased Doosan Infracore in July 2021 for about $722.45 million in exchange for a 30% controlling stake in the business. The newly formed Hyundai Genuine group will include Doosan Infracore.
